Landscaping in San Jose shapes a yard with plants, hardscape, irrigation, and grading built for our dry-summer climate. Avis Builders and Design is a licensed California general contractor, CSLB 1142220, so we handle the structural side, from patios and retaining walls to drainage, alongside planting and lawn work across Santa Clara County.
Front and back yard landscaping for San Jose homes, from planting and irrigation to hardscape and drainage, by a licensed Bay Area contractor.
A landscaping project blends living plants with built features, so we plan both together from the start. That can mean new planting beds, a lawn or lawn alternative, trees, and shrubs, along with patios, walkways, retaining walls, and irrigation. We read the sun, slope, and soil in your yard first, then set the grade so water drains away from the house. As a licensed general contractor, Avis Builders and Design can build the hardscape and drainage that many landscapers subcontract, which keeps the whole yard on one plan and one crew.
San Jose gets long dry summers and mild winters, so plants that sip water do best here. We lean on California natives and Mediterranean plants like manzanita, sage, ceanothus, lavender, and ornamental grasses that thrive with little water once they take root. Grouping plants by water need lets each zone get only what it wants, which cuts waste. Mulch over the beds holds moisture in the soil and keeps weeds down. The result is a yard that stays green through summer without a high water bill.
Hardscape gives a yard its shape and its usable space. We build patios, walkways, and seat walls in pavers, concrete, and stone, all set on a compacted base so they stay level in our shifting clay soil. Retaining walls hold back a slope, create flat usable terraces, and stop soil from washing downhill. We size the wall and its drainage to the load behind it and add proper footings so it lasts. These built features are also where a licensed contractor matters most, since they carry weight and move water.
Water is the make-or-break part of a Bay Area yard. We install drip lines for beds and efficient spray zones for lawn, run them on a smart timer, and split the yard into zones so each area gets the right amount. On the drainage side we grade the surface to carry water away from the foundation, add French drains or channel drains where water pools, and tie downspouts into the system. Getting grade and drainage right protects the house, the plants, and any hardscape from standing water.
Most planting, irrigation, and low hardscape in San Jose and Santa Clara County does not need a building permit. Permits do come up for taller retaining walls, work in a drainage easement, and structures with footings. As a licensed general contractor, Avis Builders and Design knows where that line falls, pulls a permit when a wall or structure needs one, and builds retaining walls to code so they hold the slope and pass inspection.
The right features turn a yard into a place you use after work and after dark. We add landscape lighting along paths, up into trees, and around seating so the yard is safe and inviting at night without a harsh glare. Other features like a fire pit, a water feature, raised planters, or a garden path give the space a focus and a reason to spend time outside. We plan the wiring and plumbing for these during construction, so lights and features are built in cleanly rather than run across the surface later.
New plants need the most care in their first year, so we set them up to survive our dry summers. We plant at the right depth, mulch to hold moisture, and set irrigation so young roots get steady water while they spread. We group plants that want the same amount of water, which prevents overwatering some while underwatering others. We also share a simple care plan for the first season, so the yard fills in and takes hold instead of struggling. Once established, native and drought-tolerant plants in San Jose get by on far less water.
We landscape yards across San Jose and the wider Bay Area, reaching homes off US-101, I-280, I-880, and CA-87. That takes in Willow Glen, Almaden, Cambrian, Evergreen, and Berryessa, plus nearby towns like Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Campbell, Los Gatos, and Cupertino. As a service-area contractor we walk your property to read the sun, slope, and soil, then plan a yard that fits your home and our local climate rather than a stock design.
Group plants by water need, choose California natives and drought-tolerant species, add mulch, and run drip irrigation on a smart timer. Together those steps cut water use while keeping the yard green.
Yes. We regrade the surface, add French or channel drains, and route water away from the house, which is a common fix for Santa Clara County yards on clay soil.
Yes. We build retaining walls with proper footings and drainage to hold a slope and create flat, usable space, and we permit them when the height calls for it.
Yes. We install drought-tolerant beds, ground covers, and hardscape that need far less water and mowing than a traditional lawn in our San Jose climate.
